PROMPT is built from the initials of "Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets." Behind that long-sounding name sits a very concrete idea: a motor speech method that guides the oral muscles needed for speech by touch.
How does it work?
The therapist places gentle touches on the child's face, jaw, and the area around the lips. Each touch is a cue. It lets the child all but "feel" which muscle should move, when, and how much. That way the child learns correct sound production not only through the ear but through the body. For some children, this difference is the detail that changes everything.
For some children, hearing a sound isn't enough; they need to feel it.
Which children is it suitable for?
PROMPT stands out especially with motor-based speech difficulties. It's often turned to in cases such as:
- Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)
- Severe articulation disorders
- Motor-based speech problems like dysarthria
- Compensatory patterns that develop after cleft lip and palate
Why does certification matter?
PROMPT is a globally standardized training program, and it's recommended that only certified therapists deliver it. There's a reason for that: a touch applied incorrectly can sow more confusion than benefit. In Türkiye, the number of therapists who have reached the Bridging level, the most advanced tier, is still quite limited.
We can assess together, in an intro call, whether this method is a good fit for your child.
